Bo loves tomatoes and playing ball in the middle of the night.
THE OBAMA’S SEARCH FOR FIRST POOCH ENDS
Bo Obama made his debut on the Whitehouse lawn on April 14/09 as President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Malia took turns walking him; Sasha seemed content to look on(see above video).
President Obama has kept his campaign promise to get Sasha and Malia a puppy win or lose. The new puppy an adorable 6-month-old Portuguese water dog is named Bo.
The girls named their dog Bo because their cousins have a cat named Bo and their grandfather – – First Lady Michelle Obama’s dad – was nicknamed Diddley, after legendary singer and performer Bo Diddley.
The Obamas – first-time dog owners – were attracted to the Portuguese water dog because this breed doesn’t shed which would be helpful to Malia who has allergies.
Senator Ted Kennedy has been lobbying the Obamas to get a Portuguese Water Dog (or PWD) for months and is the proud owner of three Portuguese Water Dogs. Bo is a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy and his wife Vicki, and one of their Portuguese Water Dog’s Cappy, is Bo’s brother. In fact Senator Kennedy wrote a children’s book and then produced a video called My Senator and Me: A Dog’s-Eye View Of Washington, D.C. The reader/viewer follows Senator Kennedy and his beloved Portuguese Waterdog Splash through a busy day in Washington, D.C., from press conferences to meetings with school groups to committee discussions to a floor vote. Splashy is the narrator. Listen and watch excerpts and also watch a video of the late Senator Kennedy hitting tennis balls to Splashy.

Sunny and Bo Playing on Whitehouse Lawn
Sunny arrived at the White House August 19/2013. Just like Bo, she’s a Portuguese Water Dog, which works great for the Obamas because of allergies in their family.
Known for centuries along Portugal’s coast, this seafaring breed was prized by fishermen for a spirited, yet obedient nature, and a robust, medium build that allowed for a full day’s work in and out of the water. The Portuguese Water Dog is a swimmer and diver of exceptional ability and stamina, who aided his master at sea by retrieving broken nets, herding schools of fish, and carrying messages between boats and to shore. He is a loyal companion and alert guard.
